Make no mistake about it: WinterFest 2007 was the social event of the
year.
Held
at the beautiful, new Bridgewater Place, the annual gala event drew an elegant
crowd of 70 members and their guests. Entering the meeting room, guests
immediately appreciated the large windows overlooking the Grand River, offering
a spectacular view of downtown Grand Rapids. A large video screen displayed a
slide show of images from club events over the past couple of years.
Always the proficient hostess, Brenda Hildon spent months planning a
wonderful event. Imagine her distress when the Gilmore Group advised her - less
than a week before the event - that they had not yet obtained a liquor license.
It wouldn’t be WinterFest without adult beverages, after all. The crisis was
averted by a last minute scramble that resulted in a temporary license for beer
and wine.
After
90-minute Happy Hour, an excellent buffet dinner was provided by a number of
outstanding restaurants in the Gilmore Group, featuring seafood and
custom-carved roast meats. Crisp salads and delicious vegetables rounded out the
meal, capped by an impressive selections of after-dinner sweets.
Michael Betz was the MC for the evening, once again proving it’s no easier
trying to be Jerry Seinfeld in front of a crowd as it is trying to be Michael
Schumacher on the track.
WinterFest
is a great mid-winter opportunity to see all of your Porsche pals, but – equally
important – it allows the club to offer special thanks to the many individuals
who help make the club function. Unique engraved crystal wine bottle holders
were provided as a thank you to officers, committee chairpersons, event hosts,
and other Club supporters.
Special recognition in the form of the Millennium Award, sponsored by Grand
X-Ray, was given to Doug Tepper, recognizing his many years as our IROC
representative.
The
winner of the Bill Moses Enthusiast of the Year Award is determined by carefully
calculating a point total for participation at club events. The 2006 award went
to Club Treasurer Amber Door, acknowledging her tremendous support of the club
over the past year. Oddly enough, the second place award – also known as the
“First Loser Award” – went to Rick Riley for the second year in a row.
Special prizes are always an important part of the evening. In addition to an
early bird prize to the previously-unlucky Terry Schieble, many members went
home with special door prizes.
All in all, it was a wonderful evening full of food, fun, and Porsche friends.
Don’t miss WinterFest 2008!
